• Connections Community Support Programs, Inc. is pleased to announce the opening of their Homeless Café (an around the clock drop-in center for homeless persons in Wilmington). The Café will be open around the clock starting today. The location is the former West Church at the corner of Washington and 8th Streets. The entrance is on Wollaston Street at the rear. There are no beds. People can come in at any time. There will be a place for them to sit, drink coffee and water, and have a meal of some kind, usually soup and bread. There are some blankets. By the middle of January they hope to have showers and washers and dryers.
• Connections will be keeping the Wilmington Homeless Outreach Center (500 West 8th Street) open 24 hours, 7 days a week, until January 3. During the extended hours we will provide those seeking shelter coffee and soup and a safe place to stay warm.
• Employment Opportunity: Connections is hiring staff at the Homeless Outreach Center as they provide shelter overnight and are offering $15/hour. Please contact Leslie Catts, 507-4386, or Ben Mathu, 507-7062, for more information.
• Salvation Army has started their Code Purple shelter in Wilmington for single men and single women. The shelter opens only on nights that are designated Code Purple (forecasted to be 10 degrees or below – either actual temperature or wind chill). On a Code Purple night the shelter will open at 9 pm (people can go to the Friendship House Drop-In Center before that).
• Newark Empowerment Center also operated a Code Purple shelter in Newark. Contact Friendship House for more information. 302-652-8278.
• CONNECTIONS GREATLY NEED DONATIONS! There is a great need for the following items: Toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, blankets, and toiletries. By donating these items, you will help Connections keep costs down so they can provide more nights of shelter to those who desperately need it this winter!
